The Association of Graveyard Rabbits

The Association of Graveyard Rabbits
The Association of Graveyard Rabbits is an organization I have recently heard a lot about. Not really knowing what was all about, I decided to do some research to learn more about it and inform you.

The site states:

“It is an association dedicated to the academic promotion of the historical importance of cemeteries, grave markers, and the family history to be learned from a study of burial customs, burying grounds, and tombstones; and the social promotion of the study of cemeteries, the preservation of cemeteries, and the transcription of genealogical/historical information written in cemeteries.

The Association Of Graveyard Rabbits was founded by Terry Thornton (Mississippi) with assistance from footnoteMaven (Washington) and Bob Franks(Mississippi). It features a weekly article with links to all of the articles written by the membership and a weekly feature devoted to the introduction of one of the members. Members are in contact with each other through their blogs, through a frequent Graveyard Rabbit e-Letter, and through interaction at the Graveyard Rabbit Group at Facebook. Additional publications planned include an e-Quarterly and an e-Annual.

The Association publication is implementing an articles and links library created with the contributions of its members. Discussions are ongoing about a Cemetery of the Year Award sponsored by The Association of Graveyard Rabbits.”

There are many members of the Graveyard Rabbits. If you are interested in joining this group, here are the membership requirements:
  • You must start a blog devoted exclusively to articles about cemeteries, grave markers, burial customs, the study of cemeteries, transcriptions of tombstones, or the preservation of cemeteries.

  • Your membership blog must include a statement in your banner that you are a member of The Association of Graveyard Rabbits and display the association's logo.

  • The articles you post at your Graveyard Rabbit blog should be about cemeteries, grave markers, burial customs, and information relating to burying grounds or specific gravestones.
Sheri Fenley of The Educated Genealogist is also the author,The Educated Graveyard Rabbit. She writes, “…the brainchild of Terry Thornton is a group of individuals who are interested in promoting the historical importance of cemeteries, grave markers, and the family history to be learned from a study of burial customs, burying grounds, and tombstones. As a group we pledge to promote the study of cemeteries, promote the preservation of cemeteries, and promote the transcription of genealogical/historical information written in cemeteries.

While most of the Graveyard Rabbit websites you come across are specific to certain geographical locations, The Educated Graveyard Rabbit will take you to cemeteries located across the United States.”

I look forward to reading and learning more about the Association of Graveyard Rabbits.
