Laurie Morvan Band - Fire It Up! Did you ever wonder what would happen if Suzi Quatro (think: 48 Crash) played the guitar like Stevie Ray Vaughan and started penning the kind of scorching lyrics that would make many a sailor blush? Well there’s no need to wonder any more because we have Laurie Morvan with her band and a brand new cd called Fire It Up . And can we talk? Because this girl is all that and then some ... On the Screaming Lizard record label, Fire It Up is a serious blues record that delivers what it promises – no messing blues served straight up – like it or leave it, baby -- without apologies. This is a very authentic cd – Laurie has composed every song on the record and her playing is technically very good. Don’t expect warmed over, regurgitated blues licks here- Laurie Morvan imparts a freshness to her style and is not afraid to step forward and wail; lyrically, she is both clever and naughty. This pert cheekiness is especially evident in two standout tracks, Skinny Chicks and personal fav Come On Over to My BBQ where you can hear a presumably wide-eyed Laurie suggesting that she is about to “put up my little tenderloins and let you fire up my grill.” Mercy! And it just gets better from there … Skinny Chicks extolls the value of the slim-line woman - with no disrespect whatsoever to all of the “big-legged” women out there who have been worshipped by bluesmen throughout the ages – but just a witty suggestion that perhaps everyone has something to “offer.” And hey, as a skinny chick myself, I like it - so cheers, Laurie! With a voice that alternates between strong and velvety to just a hint of second hand smoke, her throwaway “you know what I’m talkin’ about” are believable asides and never stray into the forbidden category of embarrassing poser. Click play to sample a few of these tracks below and enjoy. Laurie Morvan is here to stay, I’m thinking … Musicians: Laurie Morvan: guitar, vocals, Pat Morvan: bass Kevin Murillo: drums Lisa Grubbs: Background vocals Carolyn Kelley: Background vocals
