Just Waiting For the Bell, Stories & Adventures of an Elementary School Principal
David Wehmeyer
Tate Publishing, December, 2009

This book looks so much like the comic books young people read, I did not know what to expect. However, the insightful personal stories made me laugh out loud. I am quite sure author David Wehmeyer has dealt with more serious and complex issues during his years as an elementary school principal; however, in Just Waiting For the Bell, he talks about some of his favorite ‘funny-bone’ adventures.

I loved Mr. Wehmeyer's “That Parent” chapter. He offers cautionary advice about certain parent types to anyone who may need it. He says, They [parents] ask to spend an hour in the classroom so they can observe their child and determine if there’s a problem with behavior or not. (Do they really that their kid is going to act up while their parent is sitting in the classroom?)

Under the humor you get the feeling that through the years Wehmeyer has managed quite nicely to calm anxious parents, soothe children and mollify his teachers. This is a man who loves his job and the children in his care. His handling of students and teachers on September 11, 2001 or as he calls it, "That Day" shows not just dedication, it also shows an understanding of human nature.

In addition to humorous anecdotes, this book serves as an unofficial and easy to read how-to manual for any elementary school teacher or administrator hopeful. It would make a great inexpensive gift for young parents with a preschool child or grandparents that have been there and done that; they will surely smile in recognition of some of the children’s exploits. I have a friend who recently retired after working 30 years as an elementary school teacher, I will make sure she gets a copy of this book. I know that she can, and will, relate to these stories.
