Polish TV series

Guest Author - Barbara Swiech

Every country has probably TV series – soap operas – that gather whole families in front of TV. That was, for a long time, unknown phenomenon to Polish audience. There were some previous attempts and series, however, in 1997 a new kind of Polish movies – called TELENOWELA – became permanent part of Polish TV’s program.
Polish National TV channel announced contest for the first Polish ‘telenowela’. On 16th, 17th and 18th of June 1997 three TV series were shown to Polish viewers who voted for their favorite one. Whole Poland fell in love with Klan (‘Clan’) that was from September 1997 regularly played. The TV series, that took the second place, was also shown on TV regularly.
Below you will find names of the most popular TV series. However, each year the number of TV series watched by the Poles increases.
‘Klan’ (Clan) – was the first Polish TV series that reached 1000 episodes (more of it, in January 2011 it reached 2000 episodes). Each episode lasts about 30 minutes. It tells a story of Lubicz family and their friends and relatives.
‘Zlotopolscy’ (The Zlotopolskis) – about family from Zlotopolice. The star of this TV series was Andrzej Piaseczny (at that time one of the most popular singers).
‘Na dobre i na zle’ (For good and for worse) – this TV series takes place in a hospital. It tells about a group of doctors (and nurses) and their families. The episodes are longer than of the two TV series above, and each of them includes story of a patient.
‘M jak Milosc’ (L like Love) – once again family story.
‘Na Wspolnej’ (At Common street) – the series includes stories of neghbours living In the same street (or even block of flats), their family members and relations.
‘Pierwsza Milosc’ (First Love) – TV series that tells a story of group of friends (showing also their relations). The episodes very successfully promote Wroclaw city showing wonderful sceneries (where the action of the movies takes place)
‘Ranczo’ (Rancho)
