Common Loon Information
Guest Author - Lisa Shea

The Common Loon is found throughout most of North America. It is well known to hikers and fishermen. It has a duck shape and its primary colors are black and white. Its back is white checked on black, and its breast is white. To distinguish the common loon from the pacific loon, arctic loon and yellow-billed loon, watch for the solid black head and black bill.

Loons enjoy deep water, including large lakes, bays, and the ocean. They have a low, wailing cry.
