The Birds of Gladiator - Part III

The Birds of Gladiator - Part III
So far we have talked about the Birds of Gladiator that represented home and comfort and the Birds of his Middle East Gladiator Training. Maximus finally makes his way to Rome - a city he had fought for for many years, but never actually visited.

The first bird symbols that are shown, and indeed symbols that are shown through much of this last third of the film, are of the Roman Eagle.

The letters "SPQR" stand for "Senatus Populusque Romanus" - i.e. The Roman Senate and People. It stood for the Roman Empire, much like USA stands for the United States. The eagle was chosen as the symbol because of its strength, power and determination to achieve victory even against strong odds. In a time where warfare was constant, having a strong military force was of extreme importance to the Romans.

This eagle is on the Emperor's chair. The colors red and gold stood for Rome. The red represented the Emperor himself, while the gold stood for the majesty of his rule.

In comparison, several of the 'panoramic city' shots had flocks of doves flying through them. These represented the freedom and peace the Romans enjoyed, safe within their walls. There may have been fierce battles in the far off reaches of Germania, but the citizens of Rome had been kept safe from those.

The last real birds shown in the film are when Senator Graccus is feeding his geese, and is hauled away by the Praetorian guard. Just like in the earlier scene with Maximus, the farm animals are left alone to fend for themselves, while the humans are taken away. Geese are even more luxurious than chickens, with both larger eggs and more substantial meal potential. Although Graccus is an important senator, he still enjoys feeding his own birds, spending time with them.

The final reference to birds comes when Maximus is preparing to escape with his servant. Concerned, he gives a bird call to see if all is safe. This was extremely common with soldiers, to give signals without giving away a position. Unfortunately, the ambush captures Maximus, and he goes in for his final fight.
