International Get Over it Month To advance the practice of letting go of the past and getting over anything or anyone’s behavior that has been bothering you.

National Be On Purpose Month To urge people to act on their good intentions, both personally and professionally, to fill their lives with meaning.

National High-Tech Month To embrace technology and the part it plays in our daily lives, as well as its role in our future.

National Yours, Mine and Ours Month To honor blended and stepfamilies as one family unit.


Weekly Events in January


Jan. 1–7
New Year’s Resolutions Week. To demonstrate to people how to clearly define goals for the new year and plan for their accomplishments.

Jan. 7–13
Universal Letter Writing Week. To encourage people to forget about e-mail and put pen to paper and correspond the old-fashioned way.

Jan. 7–13
International Thank-You Days. A time to recognize and thank someone who did something nice for you in the past, whom you didn’t thank at the time.

Jan. 18–24
Hunt for Happiness Week. Sponsored by the Secret Society of Happy People to encourage people to actively seek happiness, by actively pursuing happiness or creating a “Happy Space” in your home or workspace.

Jan. 18–24
Healthy Weight Week. To celebrate a healthful lifestyle and to adopt lifelong habits to prevent eating and weight problems.

Jan. 1
New Year’s Dishonor List. Since 1976, Lake Superior State University (Michigan) releases its list of the most overused and misused words and phrases that should be banished from our vocabularies. 2003 honorees included “must-see TV,” “It’s a good thing,” “make no mistake about it,” “got game,” and “mental mistake.”

Jan. 4
Trivia Day. A day to unleash your inner Cliff Clavin and impress your friends with tidbits from your fountain of useless knowledge.

Jan. 5
Organize Your Home Day. A time to pack away the holiday decorations and organize your home, helping to manage stress and balance your home life.

Jan. 19
Martin Luther King Day. To celebrate the life of the Civil Rights leader and 1964 Nobel Peace Price winner. His actual birth date is Jan. 15.

Jan. 22
National Compliment Day. A day to express our admiration for others with positive and kind words, and to build a sense of community in the workplace.

Jan. 27
Thomas Crapper Day. To commemorate the inventor of the first flush toilet. That first water flowed in 1881.

Jan. 30
Inane Answering Machine Day. To advocate citizens to change annoying answering machine/voice-mail messages on their home or work phones.

Jan. 31
Fun at Work Day. Recruit your co-workers to participate in fun and laughter at the office. It will release tension and build rapport.
