Six Summer Businesses You can Start Now

Guest Author - Deborah Crawford

Many people start businesses in the summer to take advantage of the extra daylight hours and the warmer weather. Babysitting and lawn service businesses are just two of the more common summer businesses people start so they can make a little extra cash in the summer and then later expand to full-time.

There are several other jobs you can consider starting on a part-time basis in the summer. The start up costs can be kept really low on most of these, too. They are also good ways to “get your feet wet” and see if you really like being your own boss.

Here is a list of six of the many quick-start businesses suitable for summertime. Check with your local government for information on permits, licenses and other regulations.

Pool Cleaning: Most everyone with a pool hates maintaining it. Putting flyers or business cards in places that sell pool supplies would be a big help.

Lawn Care: Aside from just mowing and edging, watering, fertilizing, and treating for insects and disease are all things most homeowners would rather not do.

House Painting: Interior and exterior house painting is always in demand and even more so with the growth in home care supermarts and home décor shows, books and celebrities.

Auto cleaning businesses: Simple wash & wax or complete detailing—there’s a market for both. If you like making cars sparkle, consider earning money for it.

Gardening: If you have a green thumb, know what grows well in your area, and love to take care of plants, your skills are in need. You can create and sell container gardens. Or, plant and weed gardens for others. You can specialize in flower gardens or vegetable gardens, or even specialize in a certain flower, such as roses.

House Staging: This is getting houses in shape to make a great showing to prospective buyers. Usually involves decluttering, rearranging and other sprucing up techniques, such as making a home smell great. Realtors are your best source for business.

There are of course many other businesses you can get started this summer. This list is very incomplete, but maybe one of these businesses is just right for you or will spur you on to think of an even better one. Many successful businesses were started part-time and you can do it, too.
