Caribbean Adventures
Find out about great beaches, the best snorkeling and diving as well as hiking trails, nature tours, animal encounters and historical sites in the Caribbean.
Antigua and Barbuda Adventures Plentiful beaches, bountiful reefs, eco-tourism adventures and an historical naval dockyard make the twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda special. Beautiful Caribbean Beaches Barbuda Barbuda’s beaches are the stuff of dreams, especially 17-mile long Palmetto, where millions of rosy shells brought by the tides lace the shores with ribbons of pink. With little development and a small population, Barbuda is as close to an unspoiled Caribbean island as you’re likely to find.
Caribbean: Why We Love It The Caribbean is one of my family’s favorite destinations. Not just for the region’s spectacular palm-tree lined sands, conducive to lounging in the sun and lapping up the latest mystery novels, but for all the adventures and experiences we’ve shared on these islands. Discover St. Vincent’s Waterfalls Island hopping through St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a chain of 32 islands and cays, most of which are uninhabited, rewards you with the Caribbean of long ago. On lush St. Vincent, the largest of the islands, we spent days exploring waterfalls.
Explore Nevis in the Caribbean Nevis, an off-the-beaten-path Caribbean getaway,is often dubbed the “nature island.” Nevis’s charm stems from its blend of rain forest and beach on an island with a population of around 11,000, big enough to support nice hotels but small enough to escape traffic jams and major malls Explore St. Vincent and the Grenadines Island hop on St. Vincent and the Grenadines and you discover misty waterfalls on St. Vincent, sun drenched beaches on the Tobago Cays, green lawns and laid-back charm on Bequia, plus, throughout the region, reefs rich with rainbow-colored fish and coral.
Hard Rock Hotel, Dominican Republic The recently opened Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Punta Cana, ushers in a new era for the music themed chain. The 1700 room property in the Dominican Republic is the Hard Rock's first all-inclusive. The beachfront behemoth, comes with a conference center, a casino and sometimes free concerts.
Kiteboarding, Puerto Rico Kiteboarding: can a middle-aged woman of average athletic ability and no previous experience snowboarding or surfing fly through the waves on a kiteboard? Absolutely. I discover this in San Juan on Puerto Rico’s Isla Verde Beach during a two-hour lesson with 15 Knots. Planning a Destination Wedding Turks & Caicos' Grace Bay Beach, on Providenciales, with its 12 miles of sugar soft sands, fulfills any bride’s dreams of a beach wedding. During a scouting trip with my son Matt and his fiancée Christina, we discovered that planning a destination wedding is its own type of adventure. Puerto Rican Arts and Coffee San Juan keeps surprising us. Two urban finds we recently discovered are the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, dedicated to the island’s visual arts and Finca Cialitos, a historic area café devoted to serving Puerto Rican coffee picked according to standards the owner learned at his grandfather’s farm. Puerto Rico Adventures, Arecibo Puerto Rico’s Porta Atlántico stretches west from Dorado to Camuy, 63 miles from San Juan. The region’s northern coastline and inland forests and farms lure adventurers with cave explorations as well as the chance to see the world’s largest single dish radio telescope at Arecibo. St. John and Antigua, Caribbean Not all Caribbean islands are the same. For beautiful beaches and bountiful snorkeling visit St. John. For sailing and maritime history, vacation on Antigua. Swimming with Horses in Jamaica Swimming with Ziggy, a retired polo pony, in Jamaica proved to be the highlight of our horseback trip with Chukka Caribbean Adventures, Sandy Bay, Jamaica.
Three Caribbean All-Inclusives It’s not just about endless drinks and ever-available buffets. All-inclusive resorts cater to a variety of needs. Anthony's Key, Honduras, the Inn at Robert's Grove, Belize, and the Hard Rock Hotel Dominican Republic offer different flavors of the classic all-inclusive vacation. Turks and Caicos' Providenciales Providenciales, affectionately called “Provo,” features one of the Caribbean’s best beaches: 12-mile-long Grace Bay Beach. Provo, one of our favorite Caribbean destinations, offers a slow-paced, beach getaway with eco-adventures and great food. Vieques and Culebra, Puerto Rico On little-populated Vieques and Culebra, Puerto Rico’s out islands, snorkel nearly deserted bays, swim along spectacular beaches and bike back roads. On Vieques kayak a bay rated as one of the world´s best examples of bioluminescence. Adventure Living Homepage | Editor's Picks Articles | Top Ten Articles | Adventure Living Site Map
