Years ago when I was a graduate student and single parent, the first time I ever had any extra money, I took my then 8-year-old son and drove cross-country in my VW Beetle. We hiked part of the Grand Canyon, went rafting in Colorado and stayed for a month in Taos, learning to ride bareback with the Taos-Tiwa Native Americans. Ever since then, I’ve been enjoying adventures with my family, friends and by myself.

As a travel writer for more than 20 years, I have written 2000 travel articles for many magazines, newspapers and Web sites, as well as authored 27 travel books, including two for National Geographic. I won the 2004 “Caribbean Travel Writer of the Year for North America” award and I am a three -time winner of the Society of American Travel Writers’ Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism award.
