Profile of Alabama  Like its neighbor, Georgia, the earliest known inhabitants of what is now Alabama were Moundbuilders. The earliest European explorers were Spanish, in search of gold. The name Alabama comes from one of the Creek Indian tribes, it means "thicket clearers."
