Bridging to Juniors -- Article Two My troop is on the verge of Juniorhood. I´ve never been a Junior leader so I´m spending a lot of time reminding myself that they haven´t been Juniors either. With that in mind, I have plunged into the planning of the bridging. Brownie Try It Exchange [offsite link] The quality is uneven here, but there are still many many ideas for Brownie Try Its. Brownie Try It Links [offsite link] There are too many dead links at this site for my taste, but those that do work provide some excellent resources. Brownie Try It Packets and Worksheets [offsite link] The links seem to all work here and can help you organize your troop´s activities. Council's Own Awards The beauty of the Girl Scout program as I've known it over the years is that it is flexible enough to encompass all interests. Aside from the many try its, badges, and interest project awards available, troops and councils can and do offer their own awards and patch programs. Daisy Petal Ideas [offsite link] There are ideas for all of the petal requirements on this site. Add some ideas if you´re a Daisy leader! Daisy Petal Power [offsite link] The New Jersey Council of Rolling Hills has a complete list of ideas for completing the Daisy Petals. Girl Scout Community Service Awards Older girls have a variety of awards they can earn for performing community service. Here is a run down of what is available. Girl Scout Homework Recently, a Girl Scout list that I am on recently had a thread about homework and its place in Girl Scouts. A list member wrote in that she was having difficulties with girls not completing the homework required to earn badges. Girl Scout Swaps SWAPS: "Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned SomeWhere" or "Shared With A Pal." Health-Related Swaps We´ve had a really hard time with this year´s theme for Thinking Day, which is adolescent health. I thought I´d pass on some of our SWAP ideas so that you could use them. Journeys to be Required for Awards I've been getting a lot of emails, saying "I thought I was alone in disliking/hating the Journeys. Thank you for your articles." To all of you who wrote and to all of you who just thought that, you're welcome. Writing the articles is a lot like stating the obvious though. Junior Badge Idea Exchange [offsite link] This site is set up for leaders to exchange ideas. Accordingly, quality varies by submission. Browsing though should get the creative juices running. Add an idea if you´ve got one! Junior Badges 101 For new Junior leaders moving up from Brownies to Juniors, the badges can at once seem to be "more of the same" and yet "new and confusing." Looking your Best Badge Idea My Junior troop recently had another one of those "WOW!" experiences. We have been working on the "Looking Your Best" badge and as a part of that, I went looking for a store to host the girls so that they could learn about fashion. Pinky´s Swap of the Month [offsite link] This site gives detailed directions for making the cutest swaps. The dragonfly swap is one of the best I´ve seen. Plan for the Brownie Try It Her Story Although I´ve been too busy to give my bellaonline articles the attention they deserve, I have not been ignoring my troops. Here is my plan for doing the "Her Story" Try it. Strong and Courageous Daisies My youngest daughters is a Daisy, so for those of you with younger girls who thought I was done with the Brownie thing and moving onto Juniors only, not so! Summer in Scouting Summer is here and with it a lull in the usual Girl Scout activities. Although troops tend to take a hiatus in the summer, camping is a big activity that fills the void. Swap Exchange [offsite link] Really really cool swaps, many with Girl Scout designs, making them suitable for all.
Swaps with Scout Themes [offsite link] There are some really nice "scout-themed" swaps for sale at Makingfriends.com. Just browsing their products should inspire you! The Manners Try It One of the things I can do as editor of this site is view the terms individuals have used as search terms. Recently, "manners try it" came up as a search term twice. Based on that, I thought I would share what my troop did for that Try It. Try Its for First Graders Recommended Try Its for First-Grade Brownies Links marked with the [offsite link] designation point to websites not associated with BellaOnline.com. BellaOnline.com is not responsible for the material found there.
