Bean Bag Toss Game
Today the bean bag toss is mostly a nostalgic children’s game, great for children’s birthday parties or just for playing outside on a sunny day. There is every imaginable type of bean bag game available in stores - a floating kind for pools, portables to bring to the park and even astonishingly an online app (Ultimate Cornhole). Why not easily sew together a portable one! The quaint charm of the classic game and simple to make components leads itself readily to the sewer’s scrap basket.
The bean bag toss game is for players to aim the bag at a hole or container while standing at a distance, toss the bean bag in the air and hope it falls into the hole and not on other areas. Points given to get the bag into the hole. Much giggly fun for adults and children alike!
Children cheerfully identify and delight with seeing bright primary colors such as red, blue, yellow and green. Fabric scrap savers may have these colors on hand either in solid or prints. All that is needed is about 12 eight-inch squares of scrap fabric, 4 of each chosen color or print. Also needed are either dry beans, rice, or other environmentally friendly pellet-like fillings plus one clean gallon bright shiny paint can or even a colorful bucket will do.
Out of the 8-inch squares fashion a triangle folding one point of one square to its opposite point, then fold two sides of the resulting triangle and stitch in a ¼ inch seam. Turn out so the seam is now inside. Fill the opening loosely with beans, rice or pellets and hand or machine stitch close. Actually, any of a variety of dimensional sewn shapes could be chosen for the bean bag. Stitching the bag closed though does keep the filling contained.
A nice touch is to embroider eyes and mouth for smiley faces on each bean bag. The bags could be called "drips and drops" and the game becomes a drop in the bucket game! To play, mark a line one foot away from the empty container, and again one foot from that line until several lines are drawn. (Use chalk on a sidewalk, or painter’s tape on carpet.) Each player gets a color set of three beanbags. Let the players toss the bags, one at a time into the bucket from the one-foot line. Record the number of bags or "drops in the bucket". Next and subsequent rounds, step back one foot at a time and toss. The player who lands the most drops into the bucket wins!
Actually, nostalgia and childhood fun always win.
