Teaching Daughters How To Be Good Consumers
Marketing to children is big business these days, especially since consumers are a company’s biggest customer (us). Children and parents in particular are the best consumers! See how you and your daughter can control the market and make your demands in the process.

Why are parents a good consumers – because they purchase products to make life easier for the family. Raising a family, especially while working, can make life a bit challenging! Parents look for products such as furniture, toys, electronics, transportation, clothing etc… All of which will make life easier for the family as well as self. A parent’s time is very valuable - keeping a family together on a budget mixed with multiple schedules and personalities is a true challenge.

Why would your daughter be a good consumer – because the majority of her time involves being entertained? Whether it is TV, radio, social networking, video games, or friends she will be exposed to marketing. So what do you do with knowing she’s going to see or hear advertising - whether you are around or not? You invest in it, change it, work with it – as the old saying goes “if you can’t beat them, join them”.

Teach your daughter how to be a smart consumer. After your daughter realizes that marketers are trying to reach her. Mixed with a better understanding of behind-the-scenes of marketing. She will become the greatest consumer. As a parent you should make a lot of moment’s teachable moments.

Co-viewing will be a key for you. Watching some things with her and talking about what she’s watching helps. Make a game of it by asking how many products she sees during videos, movies, or commercials. Ask your daughter to like the product because of her personal taste, not because of who’s wearing it. Point out that what looks good on one person may not look good on another. Noting product placement will help her identify marketing techniques.

It’s important that you stress family values in marketing. Let your daughter know what is acceptable and welcome her opinion. Encourage her to like because it’s practical and it works better for her. Ask her how she would make the product better for herself. And finally, encourage her to write to the product company and give her suggestions, concerns and opinions. This will make her feel like she has a say and she does. The company has the right to know how she likes their product. This helps companies make a better product.

So I ask you parents and daughters, what product do you want them to make next? It’s your choice – choose wisely! You want to make this world a better place – ask for a better product!
