How To Create Resolutions That Build Character
A couple of important benefits your daughter is sure to learn are self-discipline and the value of goal setting and achieving it.
New Year’s resolutions for your daughter can be the first introduction into the idea of setting goals. Which as you know are introduced further into our adult stage.
The best way to teach your daughter about New Year’s resolutions is to make it a family tradition. Sit down and reflect as a family and look at individual challenges. In your daughter’s case if she is having a problem with her diet, encourage her to have healthier eating habits as well as the family. If she has a messy room, encourage her to commit to at least 10 minutes a day to cleaning it.
A few other suggestions should be to make academic improvements, spend more family time together, and engage less with electronics. She should also include to read a book daily, learn something new every day, to save money daily even if its pennies and to enjoy life to its fullest. Setting goals and working hard to achieve them will be the lessons learned through helping her set her goals.
We all know the feeling of meeting a goal, whether it is losing five pounds or quitting smoking. Your daughter will also relish that thrill of accomplishment, especially when her parents are acknowledging it.
No matter what the age of your daughter, she will understand the benefits of goal setting and self-discipline by following the lead of her parents. Remember that any resolution is hard to keep no matter how important it is without an incentive. Family and praise are great incentives!
New Year’s resolutions are just the beginning of helping your daughter learn about setting goals and working hard to achieve them.
“ I've lived, I've laughed and cried” - saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new will be an adventure. It will also be a way to help create self regulatory behaviors that she can integrate into being a healthy adult.
