Saving Anna is the second installment in the DI Jake Talbot series. Set in England, Detective Inspector, Jake Talbot must work undercover to expose an old acquaintance who is out for revenge. Jake is insistent on keeping his disabled sister, Anna, safe. Frankie Hayward, Jake’s eccentric best friend, has just lost his elderly wife, Lilly, and is mourning her passing. Frankie had met Lilly during what he called an ”astral travel” session, which, to those of us who are unfamiliar, is different than time travel. While undercover, the pair finds opposition from a cult – Children of the purple light. They are obviously a bit off, but cause plenty of trouble nevertheless. Jake’s regular superiors take a back seat while he and Frankie are undercover and the shots are being called by Frankie’s psychiatrist, Dr. Weissman.

Jake and Frankie are quite possibly the most bizarre protagonists to appear in a series, and their unconventional personalities are unexpectedly charming albeit very unusual.

There are dozens of twists and turns in this novel; most are unexpected, and some a bit difficult to follow. The novel is well-written, and the story flows so that it’s easy to read. The main problem is that readers aren’t sure what the initial reason Jake and Frankie have for going under cover. The novel includes a lot of paranormal activity, which can be interesting for those who believe, and a bit over the top for those who don’t. Because the story is light, it might even be considered a farce of the paranormal; it includes plenty of humor, which doesn’t prevent it from building palpable suspense, so some readers may find themselves on the edge of their seats.

Paranormal junkies will appreciate this novel and want to pick up the first in the series, as well as subsequent books that are released.
