German Chocolate Pie Recipe

German Chocolate Pie Recipe
Many people are under the impression that German Chocolate Cake originated in Germany. It is a favorite everywhere, but actually came about after a man named Sam German created a sweet baking bar at Walter Baker & Company in 1852. The bar is named after him and is now sold as Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate; the cake was developed by a Texas woman using the baking bar. So German Chocolate cake is actually all-American. Over the years, bakers have made dozens of variations to the recipe, and have made it into not only cake, but also cookies, brownies and pies. One of the best pies is the following German Chocolate Pie. The chocolate layer is made in the microwave and is very quick. The coconut pecan topping is made in about 10 minutes stovetop. If you’re looking for a new pie to blow your guests away, this is it.

10 Servings

1 1/2 cups milk
4 ounces Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate, (1 bar)

1/3 cup flour, or 1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs
1 pinch salt

2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

1 9" baked pie shell

Topping
6 tablespoons butter
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup whipping cream
1 egg yolk
1 1/2 cups coconut

  1. Place the milk in a microwave-safe container; add the chocolate bar and heat 3-5 minutes or until almost boiling.
  2. Meanwhile mix the sugar and flour; stir in the milk, eggs, and salt; mix well (I use a bullet blender).
  3. Whisk the flour/sugar/egg mixture into the hot milk and whisk until smooth; microwave 2 minutes on high power and whisk well.
  4. Microwave 2-3 minutes or until thickened; whisk in the butter and vanilla.
  5. Pour the mixture into the baked pie shell.
  6. Place a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the filling and chill.
  7. Topping: melt the butter in a small saucepan; whisk in the sugar, whipping cream, and egg yolk.
  8. Cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a boil.
  9. Remove from heat and stir in the coconut and pecans.
  10. Let cool and spread over the pie. Chill well.
