Quilt Blocks of the States - Mississippi

Mississippi - 12" Quilt Block

The next block in our state block series is Mississippi. This nine-patch block is made up of five solid squares and four striped squares. We'll use the square in the corner technique for the stripes.

Fabric Key:

Cutting Instructions:

  • Cut eight 4-1/2" squares

  • Cut one 4-1/2" square
  • Cut eight 2-1/2" squares

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: With a pencil (or your favorite marking method), draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all gold 2-1/2" squares.

Step 2: Place a 2-1/2" gold square in the upper right corner of a 4-1/2" red square. Sew on the drawn line and trim the seam allowance 1/4" above the sewn line. Press the seam allowance toward the gold fabric. Repeat in the lower left corner. Repeat three more times for a total of four striped squares.

Step 3: Arrange the sections as shown below and sew into rows (Diagram 1). Sew the rows (Diagram 2) together to finish the block (Diagram 3) .

Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
