When you're pregnant, the more you know about all of the changes going on inside your body, the better prepared you'll be to handle them. Pregnancy Week By Week will guide you through this exciting time in both your and your baby's life.

For the purposes of this guide, we will count Day 1 of your pregnancy as the first day of your last menstrual period. Since the average woman's menstrual cycle is 28 days, that means that conception occurs at approximately 14 days.

Week 3:
Changes in Mother:
- Estrogen and Progesterone levels increase
Development of Baby:
- Blastocyst implants itself in the lining of the uterus
- Produces enough HCG (hormone) to sustain pregnancy
Week 4:
Changes in Mother:
- Menstruation is suppressed (although some women may experience slight spotting)
Development of Baby:
- The cells in the blastocyst divide themselves into layers which will later develop into both the placenta and the baby
Week 5:
Changes in Mother:
- Pregnancy test will come back positive
- Frequency of urination increases
- Breasts may be tender or swollen
- Appetite increases
- Slight nausea or morning sickness
Development of Baby:
- Baby's head and spinal column are beginning to form.
Week 6:
Changes in Mother:
- Morning sickness
- Cravings and tastes change
Development of Baby:
- Head, chest and abdomen are forming
- Heart is beating
- Arm and leg buds appear
- Beginnings of mouth and jaw are visible
Week 7:
Changes in Mother:
- Morning sickness
- Cravings and tastes change
Development of Baby:
- Beginnings of fingers and toes appear
- Lungs are formed
- Eyes and ears are developing
- Intestines are forming
Week 8:
Changes in Mother:
- Your clothing is getting tight around the waist
- Breast tenderness may return
Development of Baby:
- Spine is flexible and moveable
- All internal organs are in place
- Genital organs are visible
- Shoulders, elbows, knees and hips are developing
Week 9:
Changes in Mother:
- Food cravings are common
- Some women experience stuffy head and nose upon waking
Development of Baby:
- Inner ear has developed
- Mouth and nose are developing
- arms, legs, hands and feet are growing quickly
