Tools for Melt-N-Pour Soapmaking

Tools for Melt-N-Pour Soapmaking
When you're making melt-n-pour soap there are some supplies that you really must have. There are also additional items that are nice to have too, but not absolutely necessary. My recommendation is that you try the hobby a few times first to see if you're really going to enjoy it, before you start investing money.

The must have list:

A microwave or a double boiler (don't be afraid to try both of these methods and see if you like one better than the other)

A microwave safe cup (only needed when you use the microwave instead of a double boiler)

A sharp knife (preferably a long one to make cutting the soap base easier)

A long wooden/plastic spoon

Soap Molds*

A small towel

Spray bottle that mists instead of streams, full of rubbing alcohol

The Ingredients*: soap base, soap dye and soap fragrance

Noteworthy comments:

*Keep in mind that almost anything that holds warm liquid and allows you to get it back out once it hardens, can be used as a soap mold. You can buy soap molds or you can use candy molds, muffin tins, Jell-O molds, etc. Do not be afraid to be creative!

*While the cost per ouce is generally less when you buy the larger amounts of soap base, fragrances or dyes, start off with the smaller amounts. Again, you're better off to test out the hobby before you invest heavily soapmaking.

*I recommend to use a wire cooling rack, if you have one, for allowing your soaps to cure for a day or so.

*An apron is also a good idea, if you have one. I've never had a soap base stain an article of clothing, but I have accidently gotten soap dye on my clothes and it does permanently stain.
