The Baker's Wife Book Review

The Baker's Wife Book Review
The two of the main characters are Geoff and Audrey Bolinger, a former pastor and a pastor’s wife. As the story begins, they are just making it as the new owners of a struggling bakery after Geoff is unjustly fired from his position as church pastor of a local church. They quietly continue their ministry to needy people as bread bakers.

The action in this eerie tale begins very early one morning as Audrey and her son, Ed drive to work in dense fog. It’s the kind of fog where landmarks disappear and you can’t see three feet in front of you. Audrey’s car suddenly collides with something in the fog obscured road. Searching, all they find is a mangled scooter and an alarming amount of blood. As they and the police continue the investigation, no rider can be located. Tension builds when it is discovered that both the scooter and the blood belong to the police detective’s wife. The detective, who also happens to be the church elder who engineered Geoff’s dismissal from the church.

The detective, unstable at the start, loses touch with reality and tips over the edge of insanity as he imagines Audrey is behind his wife’s disappearance. He takes hostages in the bakery until his wife can be found.

Author, Erin Healy created a story that is action packed but also a lesson in mercy and forgiveness in response to prejudice and anger. “Because,” as the character, Geoff says, “sometimes mercy is the best weapon against evil.” She does an excellent job of involving the reader in Audrey’s quest to sort out the mysteries in time to save the lives of her husband, her son and their friends.

Audrey, the Baker's Wife, possesses a certain gift that causes her to physically feel the pain of others. She uses this gift in her ministry of mercy. Erin Healy touches on the supernatural here but so expertly binds it to the physical that we are drawn to look for it in our own lives – to be so in tune with the feelings of others that mercy is an automatic and necessary response.

Erin Healy is an award-winning editor and a best-selling co-author with Ted Dekker. Healy received wide acclaim for her two debut novels “Never Let You Go” and “The Promises She Keeps“. Her work focuses on the psychological and spiritual, driven by high moral stakes. She lives and writes in Colorado with her family.
