What Is a Tea Sommelier?

As tea gains popularity in the United States and Canada; an influx of newer tea terms or seldom used tea terms are seen.

The world of tea brings forth a lot of creativity surrounding tea taste and tea drinks as well as who makes and serves them.

Which brings us to the term Sommelier; the French word is simply defined as an individual with expert knowledge in a subject. While most people have heard the term sommelier; they have heard it coupled with wine. A wine sommelier is a wine Stewart but one with a certificate of training in all aspects of the wine business. They usually are employed in finer restaurants and hotels.

Tea has characteristics and notes just like wine; however, the taste of tea does depend on who is brewing it. Wine, however, once bottled its taste is done.
So then too, if the term Tea Sommelier is used or that it is after ones name as a title, we can truly assume that the person is a tea professional. This tea professional would be trained in all aspects of tea.

How and why do I become a Sommelier? There are many programs that may be offered. Always use buyer beware attitude when looking for a certified tea program. Remember that while programs may vary, one would seek out only a reputable business or college that has certified programs that would offer international recognition.

Tea sommelier training should include multiple layers of training in many departments of tea. Tea Sommelier training will commence with the recognition of tea types. This is imperative, the simple recognition of types of tea. One also should be versed in how to make a perfect cup of tea, times in which to steep tea, the blending of tea, the pairing of tea with food, tea consumption, tea caffeine content, knowledge of tea growing areas of the world, the way that tea is cultivated, and the way tea is harvested and processed. These areas are just a few but most likely will be included in the expert tea master level.

What kind of job can I get if I am certified in being a Tea Master or Tea Sommelier? Most of the people currently obtaining a certification in Tea Mastery run a tea business or are in the restaurant business, are tea aficionados, or run hotel teas for example. But, one does not have to be in one of those mentioned businesses to become a Tea Master/Sommelier. A personal love of tea, a tea blogger or writer such as me can also seek out a certificate in Tea Mastery.

Last words, the terms/titles Tea Sommelier, Tea Master and Tea Expert are interchangeable depending on what industry the Sommelier is in.
