Cooking ahead is not a new concept; the idea has been around for years, and there are hundreds (or more) cookbooks out there with dishes and ideas. However, in Food52 A New Way to Dinner: A Playbook of Recipes and Strategies for the Week Ahead, the ideas are streamlined for modern, busy cooks who have better things to do than spend time in the kitchen. The recipes are innovative, but fairly easy to prepare, and down-to-earth – food that people will actually want to eat. The authors are aware of the fact that people are busy, and even those who love to cook have limited time to spend preparing meals.

The book is worth purchasing if only for the Overnight Pork Roast – which is easy to prepare, has minimal ingredients, and is absolutely yummy. The leftover meat can be used in several recipes in the book, as well as others that may be convenient for the cook.

The book is organized into sections that include everything to be prepared for the week ahead. The planning is already done, so readers and cooks won’t have much to do but purchase the ingredients as listed, and follow the recipes to make the food ahead. Even though the dishes are listed, there is room for individuals to change a few things according to their family’s preferences or according to the time allotment during any given week. One of the impressive things about each chapter is the vast variety of recipes, which will appeal to almost everyone. Actually, I haven’t seen many cookbooks with so many recipes that I want to make. The recipes cover all four seasons, and there are recipes for everything from appetizers, salads, and main dishes, to fabulous desserts, all fitting into meal plans that are easy to move around.

This cookbook is highly recommended for anyone who likes good food, and wants to have everything done ahead so that mealtime is very easy.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying an advance review copy of this excellent cookbook.
