Cozy mystery lovers will welcome the release of a new series, Mystery A-la-mode, and the first installment, I Scream, You Scream, by Wendy Lyn Watson. The protagonist, Tullulah Jones (Tally) owns a struggling ice cream shop, Remember the A-la-mode, located in the small town of Dalliance, Texas. Since she needs the business, she agrees to provide dessert at a picnic sponsored by her ex-husband’s company. Her cheating ex-husband has a new girlfriend, Brittany, who lives with him in Tally’s previous home, and when she turns up dead on the night of the picnic, the cops suspect that it’s murder. Unfortunately, Tally is one of the top suspects, and must find who the real murderer is before she is arrested and charged.

Watson has done a good job of telling the story, including twists and turns, and a few surprises. She also does an excellent job introducing her characters and making them seem like real people. The characters seem like typical small-town residents, and Tally is quite likeable. One of her old boyfriends has just moved back to Dalliance; he is also likeable, and in addition to helping her find the murderer, there may be a romantic comeback between the two.

While cozy mysteries generally aren’t high-suspense, they are fun and I Scream, You Scream is no exception. Unfortunately, there are no recipes included, which would have made it even more fun, since the flavors of ice cream mentioned in the novel sound decadent.

This is a good cozy series, and will be enjoyed by cozy lovers of all ages.
