Patriotic Watermelon Berry Bowl Recipe

Patriotic Watermelon Berry Bowl Recipe
Memorial Day is not only the beginning of the summer holidays, it kicks off several patriotic holidays, giving us an excuse to decorate and entertain through Independence day. Flag day is Jun 14th, and there is also Armed Forces Day (the last Saturday in June), and of course, Independence Day on July 4th. It’s the perfect time to have a picnic, as well as outdoor gatherings such as barbecues. Since fresh fruit is available at farmer’s markets, roadside stands, and grocery stores, it’s nice to serve a “red, white, & Blue” salad or dessert. The following Patriotic Watermelon Berry Bowl is not only in keeping with the patriotic theme, it is delicious and will complement almost any summer main dish. Since the fruit is sweet, it can also double as a dessert.

Patriotic serving dishes are inexpensive and available everywhere (there are expensive ones too, of course, but for casual outdoor gatherings, melamine is just fine). This easy dessert/salad can be made quickly, especially with the availability of goat cheese crumbles (you can substitute feta or other favorite soft cheeses). No dressing necessary - just a squeeze of lime over all just before serving.

12 Servings

6 cups watermelon, cut into 1" cubes
6 cups berries, sliced strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries

1 cup crumbled goat cheese, or substitute feta or a favorite soft white cheese

1 to 2 limes
  1. Place the watermelon chunks in a strainer over the sink to drain out as much juice as possible while you get the remaining ingredients ready.
  2. Measure the berries into a large serving bowl.
  3. Add the goat cheese and toss.
  4. When the watermelon has drained, add it to the berry mixture; squeeze the lime(s) over all and toss. Serve immediately.
