Slow Cooker Classic Apple Crisp Recipe
Some balk at desserts of this type cooked in a slow cooker because the toppings don’t crisp up. The solution to this problem is to tilt the lid slightly during the last hour which lets off the steam and allows excess liquid to evaporate. Alternatively, you can briefly put the crock (this works only for the Casserole Crock, not deep slow cookers) under the broiler (several rungs down so the high heat doesn’t ruin the slow cooker insert) for a minute or two to crisp it up. Make sure you top each serving with high-quality vanilla ice cream or real sweetened whipped cream.
For variety, you can add a few raisins or dried cranberries to the apple mixture, and you can also add a few pears or a mixture of sweet and tart apples.
3 pounds cooking apples, (about 8 cups) peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup flour
3/4 cup oats
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup melted butter
- Toss the prepared apples with the flour, sugar, and cinnamon.
- Transfer the mixture to a slow cooker with a large footprint, such as a Casserole Crock or 6-8 quart oval; spread the apples evenly.
- Topping: In a bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
- Mix in the melted butter and stir until crumbly.
- Sprinkle evenly over the apple mixture.
- Cover the slow cooker, set to high, and let cook about 4 hours or until the apples are tender.
- During the last hour, tilt the lid slightly to allow the topping to crisp.
