Fans of the Pancake House Mystery Series will welcome Crêpe Expectations, where protagonist Marley McKinney and her chef, Ivan, sit in as judges for an annual Wildwood Cove amateur chef competition where some of the judges are getting mysteriously sick. Besides that, Marley visits a Victorian mansion that is being landscaped by her boyfriend and discovers a skeleton that ends up belonging to a girl who disappeared during a party over 10 years prior. Because there is evidence near the body that is connected to one of Marley’s friends, Marley gets involved in trying to solve the murder. There are plenty of suspects, and Marley, as usual, gets into a bit of trouble when questioning them. The romance between Marley and live-in boyfriend Brett is alive and well, and since Marley gets herself into several scrapes and dangerous situations, it’s a good thing Brett is around.

Crêpe Expectations is a fun, well-written culinary mystery, and is the fifth installment in the series. It includes mouthwatering unique recipes, and plenty of references to food. This is a nice series for food lovers, and the twists and turns keep readers guessing who the real murderer is and wondering if some of the main characters could have gone to the other side. The ending is, as usual a surprise, and the characters who are regulars and old friends in the series are fun to read about.

Culinary mystery aficionados will enjoy this series, and especially this novel. Since it contains no graphic, sex, violence, or language, it’s suitable for mystery lovers of all ages. It is a light read and since it’s not very long, it can be read on an airplane trip or a sit on the beach. Definitely recommended for cozy lovers.
