Sweet Cream Ladies, Ltd., a cozy mystery novel by Flo Fitzpatrick, begins when two, mostly-out-of-work aging actresses are having margaritas at their favorite haunt and decide that they need extra money. They form Sweet Cream Ladies, Ltd., an organization that gets rid of terrible ex-husbands, professional rivals, and genuinely bad people. The problem, besides being extremely intoxicated, is that they announce not only their plans, but those who are already on the hit list to everyone in the restaurant. Of course most would think they are simply joking, but when the first three on the hit list are found murdered in exactly the way Babs and Bootsie (the protagonists) have described, they find themselves on a big suspect list, and the police are taking their business seriously.

The novel, besides being a light cozy, could be considered a humorous satire on cozy murder mysteries. None of the scenarios are actually believable, and the characters don’t seem to be serious either. Nevertheless, the novel is light, funny, and will keep readers laughing. There is also an element of suspense, which keeps readers wondering who is really murdering the people Babs and Bootsie have on their list, and how that murderer knows how to go through with the murders according to Babs’ and Bootsie’s plans.

While satirical in nature, the book is well-written and flows well so that it is a quick read. The story is fun and the dénouement is a surprise. Fitzpatrick is a seasoned writer, mostly in the romance genre (and there is an element of romance in this as well as the suspense), and it is evident that she knows how to tell a story that reins her readers in and keeps them to the end.

Those who like to read something fun without graphic sex, language, or violence should pick up this book and enjoy the humor.
