Caring for Your Skin With Aloe Vera and Peppermint
The Benefits of Aloe Vera and Peppermint Essential Oil
Aloe Vera is said to contain antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins A and C and is highly anti-inflammatory. It is also known to help with burns, acne and dry skin. With acne care it said to work best on superficial surface acne rather than cystic or deeper acne. As a beach goer, we all know that aloe vera can be ideal for sunburned or irritated skin.
Peppermint Essential Oil should be diluted before being applied to your skin. Typically essential oils are diluted with a vegetable/carrier oil. You can also use shea or cocoa butters, especially for after beach use and foot massages.
Here's a recipe for you to make for after sun care.
Aloe and Peppermint - An After Sun Lotion
This recipe is one that was created by Kari Peters. You can find more at her website: getinspiredeveryday.com
Here's what you will need:
1/4 cup beeswax, grated
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup aloe vera gel : at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon peppermint essential oil
How to Make:
Place the beeswax and coconut oil into a saucepan and cover at low heat. Heat until melted with no remaining flecks of beeswax. If it's not completely melted, the lotion won't emulsify properly and there will be gritty pieces of beeswax in the finished product. Try to keep the temperature as low as possible to preserve the benefits of the coconut.
Remove the oil mixture from the heat and whisk in the room temperature aloe vera gel and peppermint essential oil until thoroughly combined. Allow your lotion to cool to room temperature for about two to four hours. Whisk again. For a whipped version, place the lotion in a blender and blend at medium speed for about 30 seconds.
This mixture will look thin from the beginning but will thicken up as it cools. As some of the aloe vera slowly evaporates, it will naturally become thicker and more solid.
If you put the aloe vera gel into the hot mixture straight from the refrigerator, the mixture might not emulsify, instead leaving clumps.
This should get you started and off to a fun filled summer enjoying the warmth of the sun, knowing that your skin is being provided for.
That's it for this week.
