How to Reduce Anxiety by Eating Foods That Calm
Let's Take a Look at These Foods
Water - You all know that water should be top of mind and your list when it comes to staying hydrated. Doesn't mean that you adhere to it, does it. In a study done by the University of Connecticut, when people experienced mild dehydration after walking on a treadmill for 40 minutes, they felt more anxious. They also experienced a drop in energy and couldn't think as clearly. The advice given was to drink 8 ounces of water next time you need to settle your nerves.
Drink Green Tea Instead of Coffee - Coffee drinkers might have a problem with this, especially if you drink a pot a day. For others a cup can make you anxious and jittery. Try a cup of green tea instead. A cup of green tea has 45 mg of caffeine, compared to 200 mg of coffee. It also contains the compound l-theanine, that's known to promote alertness while reducing stress and anxiety.
More Fruits and Vegetables Anyone? - Did you know that a study done by the American Journal of Public Health over a two year period, found that 8 servings a day of fruits and vegetables was linked to increased happiness and well-being?
It's thought that the boost could come from the increased intake of antioxidants, especially carotenoids, which is known to have a positive effect on your mood.
Salmon is a fatty fish and a top source of omega-3 fatty acids. They are thought to reduce inflammation in the brain and improve your mood. Higher levels of mega-3s tend to lower anxiety and make it easier to cope with stressful situations.
Dark Chocolate - The next time stress begins to ride your back, try a piece of dark chocolate. Studies have found that the polyphenols found in cocoa can ease symptoms of anxiety by helping you feel calmer and more content. Dark chocolate contains more cocoa and less added sugar.
Don't Stop With This List ...
Of course this is only the beginning of foods and drinks that can help with calming anxiety. The key is clean eating. Consuming foods that have you feeling lighter and energized after eating them and don't make you crash. Don't forget to keep water at the top of the list.
That's it for this week. As always ...
