Book Review of Humility by Murray

Book Review of Humility by Murray
It¡¦s been a while since I shared a book review with you. Today I'm telling you about Humility from the Read & Reflect With The Classics collection. I used the book as a daily morning study, and I confess it was humbling. I discovered what I considered humility only scratched the surface of the humility of Jesus.

The author of the teachings is Andrew Murray. He was a South African writer, teacher, missionary, and Christian pastor. Born May 9, 1828 and died January 18, 1917. He wrote over two hundred-forty books.

Murray's language and sentence structure was, at times, difficult for me to understand. As I said above, he lived in the eighteen and early nineteen hundreds. However, I found this was beneficial, as it caused me to slow down and consider each word for understanding.

At the end of each chapter, there are Scripture references for additional study. There are also questions, not written by Murray, inviting the reader to process and reflect on the truths in the teaching. A prayer is added, also not by Murray, that actually reflected my own thoughts on the chapter.
If you have trouble, as I did, understanding all of Murray¡¦s writing, press on. This book is applicable to every serious Christian reader. Murray invites us to study the character of Christ until our souls are filled with the love and admiration of his lowliness.

The following are a few of the truths I noted in my daily study of Humility.
  • Evil can have no beginning but from pride and no end but from humility.

  • "Humility is the bloom and the beauty of holiness."

  • A warning: pride can lift its head in the temple of God and make his worship the scene of self-exaltation.

  • Deliverance from self is not being occupied with your sin, but being occupied with God.

  • Pride makes faith impossible.

  • Glory that comes from God only comes where God is All.

  • Concerning death to self: accept every humiliation and consider it a means of grace to bring humility.

I found my copy of Humility at a local Christian bookstore. The link below will take you to the book on Amazon.com.
