Whenever I see the word “healthy” in the name of a cookbook or dish, I become skeptical. It seems everyone thinks they can make recipes healthy by taking out some of the ingredients that make the recipe tasty. While Dana Angelo White has several degrees and is a registered dietitian and nutrition and fitness consultant, that doesn’t necessarily mean she presents good recipes. However, Healthy One Pan Dinners: 100 Easy Recipes for Your Sheet Pan, Skillet, Multicooker and More includes some surprisingly mouthwatering dishes that everyone, even skeptics, will want to cook and eat. White has done a good job of adapting her recipes to a healthier lifestyle by cutting fat, calories, and the amount of meats, poultry, and fish (adding more healthy vegetables instead).
The recipes are mostly quite easy and doable for cooks of all levels. Almost everyone owns sheet pans, skillets, casserole dishes, slow cookers, and maybe a multi-cooker, so the recipes can be made without having to go out an purchase new appliances or pans. Given that, these dishes can be prepared in almost any kitchen. One of the plusses of the recipes is that they call for ingredients that are readily available. The recipes themselves are easy-to-follow and there are good explanations at the beginning of each recipe which helps the cook get to know just what the dish entails. There are some beautiful photographs in this cookbook; although I’m a firm believer that a proper cookbook should include a photograph of every dish, because cooks want to know what each of their dishes will look like. Most cookbooks today barely have a few, but this cookbook has more than most, and that is helpful.
Anyone interested in making more healthy dishes will find several good recipes that will appeal to them. The recipes work as they should and are tasty.
