Are You Starting an Herbal Garden? Awesome!
Start an herbal garden? If I had my rather, I'd rather not. Then like many of you I found myself in the middle of COVID 19. Everything coming out about living through this virus was pointing to keeping your immune system healthy.

I'd been living with this premise for years. I'd purchase my herbs, dry them, store them in mason jars all neatly labeled and be stocked up for winter. Then COVID arrived and we were ordered to shelter in place.

As I ventured out to the grocery store or farmers market, fresh vegetables and herbs weren't so fresh. A colleague of mine had suggested I start an herb garden years ago. She did it to relieve stress. Not only did she grow herbs, she had collards, lettuce, blueberries, peppers and a host of other vegetables and fruits.

So this year with the world in turmoil, I started a garden. Mind you, my fears and apprehensions were greater than when I started my current business. My Elders had tilled the soil and produced lots and lots of vegetables in their gardens. I benefited. However, the responsibility of planting, watering, growing, fertilizing and watching for bugs, slugs and snakes was all on them.

Then I learned about pot gardening...

Pot Gardening allows me to have my cake and eat it too ... so to speak. I have the beauty of a garden - in pots-, yet they're in a controlled environment on my sun porch. I was about to water them when it began to rain.

I sat them outside the sun porch and they have taken on a new life since them. There goes the controlled environment. LOL! They have thrived and flourished with natural sunlight, rain water and air from Mother Nature.

Starting Your Herbal Garden With Herbs to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

Holy Basil/Tulsi is often referred to as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are herbs and some mushrooms that support your body’s natural ability to deal with stress. Holy Basis is one of those herbs/adaptogens. It's been known to tackle stress, anxiety and inflammation. There's a beautiful pot of that growing in the back yard.

Lavender has been used for centuries to relieve anxiety, stress and nervousness. You know it best for its use in aromatherapy. Yet lavender, the flowers are used to make an awesome cup of tea. Lavender is also known to reduce cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol is the stress hormone.

These two herbs alone are worth their weight in gold when it comes to stress relief and you can definitely grow them in your garden. The only other herb I'd add to this list is Ashwagandha for stress relief. It is not native to the United States, however it can be purchased in health food stores in powder form as well as teas.
