Everyone knows that southern food is delicious, and good cookbooks with southern recipes are always in demand. Elizabeth Heiskell has written several excellent cookbooks filled with mouthwatering southern recipes, and her newest one, Come On Over!: Southern Delicious for Every Day and Every Occasion is no exception. The book is filled with terrific recipes with a southern flair.
As is her style, Heiskell inserts her personality into the prose and makes the book a fun one to read. It’s also fun to cook from, and the recipes are succinct and easy to follow. There are also several (there are never enough for me) excellent photographs of the recipes, and that makes it difficult to decide what to make.
Although there are recipes for good everyday dishes, her entertaining dishes are the star of this cookbook. She has included great appetizers like Smoked Tuna Dip, Crabmeat Maison (decadent), and Cornbread muffins with Jalapeño Pimento Cheese. It’s often hard to find side dishes, but this book is full of them – a Squash Casserole that is addicting, as well as Vidalia Onion and Artichoke Casserole (both are unique) - to name a few. There are salads, main dishes, and mouthwatering desserts. Her recipes are suitable for cooks at all levels, from beginning to experienced.
This is definitely a good cookbook to include in a cookbook collection. It has enough recipes for all occasions to make it a cookbook that will be used often, and there are dozens of recipes that will become favorites. Highly recommended.
