While the official definition of lasagna is “pasta in the form of broad often ruffled ribbons or a baked Italian dish consisting of wide strips of pasta cooked and layered with meat or vegetables, cheese, and tomato sauce,” Julia Rutland, writer and recipe developer takes lasagna to a higher realm in her excellent cookbook, 101 Lasagnas & Other Layered Casseroles, including dozens of mouthwatering baked (mostly) and layered dishes and desserts. While technically not all of them could be defined as “lasagna,” this cookbook has innovative and unique recipes for layered dishes that are worth preparing. She has included recipes from all over the world, and uses not only standard lasagne (when referring to just the pasta, the word ends in e), but other things such as tortillas in the layers.
Anyone who likes to serve casseroles with layers will love the ideas in this cookbook, and since the instructions are easy-to-follow, every cook, from novice to advanced will be able to turn out picture-perfect casseroles that will please everyone. Some of the recipes have several steps, but the steps are not difficult. Another bonus is that many of the dishes featured are make-ahead, and a big help to those cooks who are busy and those cooks who want everything done ahead if they are entertaining so that they can enjoy their guests.
Some of the favorite dishes are an Egg and Bacon Brunch Lasagna, Pepperoni Lasagna, Chicken & Caramelized Onion Lasagna with Blue Cheese Béchamel, and Turkey Pot Pie Lasagna. There are also a few mouthwatering dessert lasagnas, some even using lasagna noodles.
This cookbook does have some beautiful photographs, but unfortunately not a photograph of every dish. That is the only drawback, because everything else about the cookbook is very positive. This cookbook is definitely recommended for everyone who likes layered casseroles.
