Claire Beaudry Chase is married to a politician, Griffin, who like most politicians is corrupt and willing to do anything to be powerful and win an election (as governor in this case). Claire is attacked in her home and left for dead, and she suspects it was her husband who committed this crime in The Shadow Box, by bestselling author Luanne Rice. Claire is an artist, and creates shadow boxes which are scheduled to be shown in an art exhibit just after her attack. Because she knows a lot about her husband and that he committed a crime 25 years ago, she creates a shadow box that represents that crime. She must disappear in order to stay alive because her husband’s supporters are more than willing to kill her to cover up what he did so his political career isn’t ruined. Unfortunately some of Claire’s acquaintances are murdered and they don’t seem to be connected, but Claire investigates and puts herself in even more danger than she is already in.

Fans of Luanne Rice are already familiar with her excellent storytelling skills; this novel keeps readers on the edge of their seats, and there are enough interesting twists, that the book is impossible to put down. One of Rice’s strengths is creating characters and developing them so that they seem like real people. While the scenarios are not particularly plausible as far as Claire is concerned (although not completely farfetched), they ring true for the elite politicians who are against her.

The Shadow Box is an interesting thriller with a unique plot and plenty of suspense. The protagonist is likeable, and the dénouement is surprising. Recommended for thriller aficionados.
