Kit Kat Mousse Recipe

Kit Kat Mousse Recipe
Chocolate Mousse is a rich pudding-like dish usually made with high quality chocolate, sometimes beaten egg whites, and whipped heavy cream. Over the years this classic dish has been abused by moron cooks who think they can reduce the calories or use pudding mix (let’s not get started on mousse used in beauty salons). Of course these dishes are an abomination to anyone with good taste and who values keeping classics as they should be. The chocolate mousse recipe I used during 20+ years of catering always drew raves and was rich and decadent. It only contained two or three ingredients (highest quality 60% cacao chocolate, heavy whipping cream, and sometimes beaten egg whites to lighten it). While stir-ins are rare, this Kit-Kat Mousse has an addition of crunchy ground candy bars (taking away, of course from the “high quality” of the chocolate, but adding a delicious crunch).

This is not, by any means classic mousse, but it is decadent and luscious; it is a perfect way to use up any Kit-Kat candy bars left over from Halloween. When I serve it at my Halloween BOO-ffet, I call it Scaredy (kit) Cat Mousse.

12 Servings

2 cups 60% cacao semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup whipping cream

1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped to stiff peaks

2 cups Kit Kat Candy Bars, finely chopped or ground

Sweetened whipped cream, for serving
Kit Kat Candy Bar, broken in half for garnish

  1. Place the chocolate chips and whipping cream in a large glass microwave-safe measuring cup or bowl, add the whipping cream, and microwave 3 minutes.
  2. Remove from the oven and let sit 5 minutes.
  3. Whisk until smooth and refrigerate until just set but still soft.
  4. Mix the chocolate mixture with the whipped cream; fold in the chopped Kit Kat Bars.
  5. Transfer to a pretty serving bowl and pipe sweetened whipped cream on top; add a piece of Kit Kat bar to each bit of whipped cream.
