Jamaican Currant Rolls Recipe

Jamaican Currant Rolls Recipe
I love to read cozy culinary mysteries. Not only are they light murder mysteries, but they usually have good recipes to make while reading the novels. Recently I read a delightful cozy, Against the Currant by Olivia Matthews, which was fun, with good characters that I hope will be repeated in subsequent novels. The protagonist in this cozy has just opened a bakery, and there is a recipe for her famous Jamaican Currant Rolls, which are flaky and delicious. I have adapted her recipe to my own methods; these are different and definitely worth making. I would also recommend reading the novel if you like cozies.

12 Servings

1 13 1/4 ounce puff pastry sheet(s), (I use Jus-Rol brand which is fresh, not frozen)
1/4 cup melted butter
1 1/4 cups dried currants

2 1/2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon milk

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. Line a shallow baking sheet with parchment or Silpat.
  2. Roll the puff pastry out on a lightly floured surface (a pastry cloth works best) to a rectangle 12" x 17".
  3. Brush with half of the melted butter.
  4. Sprinkle the currants evenly over the surface of the puff pastry.
  5. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over the currants.
  6. Starting at the wide end of the puff pastry, roll up jelly roll style as tightly as possible.
  7. Cut the roll in half and place both halves on the prepared baking sheet, seam side down.
  8. Mix the egg and milk; brush over the surface of the rolls and poke each several places with a fork.
  9. Bake 25 minutes or until light golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven; brush with the remaining butter and return to the oven for 5 minutes.
  11. Remove from the oven and transfer the rolls to a cooling rack.
  12. When the rolls are cool use a serrated knife to cut each roll diagonally into six pieces.
