Detective George Elms is out of prison in the fourth installment of Charlie Gallagher’s End Game. Elms is not particularly well-liked by his former colleagues, but several police officers have been murdered, and there are more to come. So George is asked to help solve the case, and is given the chance to choose his own team. He doesn’t trust many of the officers, and most of the officers don’t trust him. There are other sub-plots going on at the same time, and it makes for unexpected twists and turns, as well as danger to those who are important to George.

Although most readers probably have read the previous novels in the series and are familiar with the characters, some of us haven’t read Gallagher before, and the unfamiliarity with the characters may be a negative to the enjoyment of the novel. Some of the characters are not developed as well as they should be. The story doesn’t flow, and seems to jump from scenario to scenario making it a bit difficult to follow.

All told, this novel has a good plot, but shouldn’t be read as a standalone novel. Most readers will benefit from reading the previous novels in the series before reading this one.
