English Fish & Chips Pie Recipe

English Fish & Chips Pie Recipe
Fish & Chips is the most iconic dish served in the UK. It seems to be on the menu in every pub and also most restaurants. It’s not easy or convenient to make at home, since both the fish and chips (fries) are fried in oil, and most of us don’t like to get out the deep fryer and stink up our houses. The following English Fish & Chips Pie has the flavors of fish & chips, without the hassle of deep frying, and the fish is covered with a creamy sauce, topped with crunchy chips.

While this dish is very different from its namesake, it is delicious and the moist, flaky fish in the creamy sauce is complemented by the crunchy chips.

4 Servings

1 pound frozen French fries, Thin cut or thick, your choice

1 pound cod, or other white fish

1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

2 tablespoons butter

Cream Sauce:
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 medium onion, chopped

1 cup water
1 cup Basic Cream Soup Mix
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4-1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon dried dill weed
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

  1. Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Spread the French fries on a small baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, stir, and return to the oven until beginning to brown.
  3. Meanwhile, cut the cod into four pieces. Mix the flour and salt and pepper; dredge the fish in the mixture.
  4. Melt the 2 tablespoons butter in a non-stick skillet; sauté the cod, turning once, until just cooked through. Transfer the cod to a shallow 7" x 9" baking dish (or 9" x 9" or 8" x 8").
  5. Cream sauce: Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add the onion and sauté until softened. Add the water and cream soup mix; stir over medium heat until thickened. Add the heavy cream, pepper, dill, and lemon juice; stir well until smooth. Pour over the fish in the casserole dish.
  6. Scatter the lightly browned French fries over the cream sauce. Return to the oven and bake 25-30 minutes or until bubbly. Serve with fresh lemon slices.
