Carolyn Haines writes cute, light cozies, and her 29th installment in the Sarah Booth Delaney series, Doggone Bones: A Sarah Booth Delaney Mystery is a fun and easy read. In this novel, Sarah Booth and her best friend Tinkie, through the Delaney Detective Agency, investigate a dog napping incident that balloons into a huge problem in the small town of Sunflower County, MS and puts Sarah Booth and Tinkie in grave danger as they try to find who is behind the dog disappearances. As is the stereotype of small southern towns, the mayor and law enforcement are corrupt and Sarah Booth and Tinkie have some trouble getting through to them and exposing the culprits.
Sarah Booth is a good and likeable protagonist, and a definite pet lover, especially as far as her dog, Sweetie Pie. The sub-characters in the novel are well developed and believable, and it’s amazing that so much crime is going on in such a small town. The story is well-told, and easy to follow, and by the dénouement, all of the loose ends are tied up and readers will enjoy the surprise ending. There are several suspects, and readers will have trouble deciding who the culprits are; they will most likely be wrong.
All told, this is a fun series, and a fun cozy. Those who want light reading without violence, sex, and profanity, will want to read this novel and the other books in the series.
