I have always been fascinated with Chinese culture, and traveling for a living introduced me to many different places where Chinese celebrations take place. So I was excited to order Feasts of Good Fortune: 75 Recipes for a Year of Chinese American Celebrations, from Lunar New Year to Mid-Autumn Festival and Beyond, to learn about and make dishes for these celebrations. The prose of the book is fascinating and explains the reason behind tshe celebrations, as well as how they are celebrated and important things like etiquette, what not to do and what to do. There is also a list of Chinese ingredients, many available at mainstream grocery stores, and others that require a trip to an Asian grocery. After the preliminaries, each major holiday is listed along with mouthwatering recipes for dishes to be served on those days.

The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions which are easy to follow and the dishes are doable for both advanced and beginner cooks. There are notes, tips, and explanations before each recipe which are excellent and make the dishes understandable. Most of the recipes are accompanied by beautiful, professional photographs that make the dishes look mouthwatering.

All told, whether you want to celebrate with the Chinese, or just cook good Chinese dishes, this is a fun cookbook to add to your cookbook collection.
