Everyone who loves musicals knows that food often plays a part in the lines and scenarios of the plays. Veeda Bybee has compiled some of the food mentions in family-friendly plays in a fun cookbook, A Few of My Favorite Things: Recipes Inspired by Family-Friendly Musicals. The recipes included are appealing, and bring to life what theater goers imagine their favorite characters are eating.

The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow. The recipes are easy enough for both beginners and also cooks with a bit more experience. There are notations next to each recipe as to which play the food comes from. Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful, professional photograph which makes it difficult to decide which recipe to make next. The chapters are cleverly named Overture (ingredients and kitchen tools), Opening Number (Breakfast), Act 1 (Sides, Salads, ad Dressings), Intermission (Snacks and Beverages), Act II (Entrees), and Finale (Desserts and Toppings); the recipes cover all courses.

This is a fun book; most adults are familiar with the musicals since they have been and are still being performed in community theaters as well as on Broadway and London’s west end. Even those who aren’t familiar with the musicals, the dishes are tempting and will be something people actually want to make.
