Almost everyone loves road trips, and most of us would love to make one along a California coast. Restaurateur Scott Clark visited several establishments on his road trip along the middle California coast, and presents recipes and ideas from these places. Scott presents his take on the dishes and his experiences on this trip in a colorful cookbook, Coastal: 130 Recipes from a California Road Trip.
Cheyenne Ellis, the photographer definitely deserves kudos since she captures the beauty of Scott’s road trip as well as the dishes that are presented. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions. Most of the recipes are fairly simple with short lists of ingredients, but many also have several steps to make things like bacon, farmer’s cheese, and homemade furikaki. Most of us are too busy to spend that much time in the kitchen. Even those of us who love to cook and make unusual dishes will find that the dishes are mostly “above our pay-grade,” and not viable for most people.
While the dishes are nice to look at, they aren’t the types of dishes that appeal to most people. A few sound good and look good (I’ll be making the Rhubarb Brownies), but the actual time and effort involved in making them isn’t worth it. Most readers who peruse a cookbook will make a list of “must make soon” dishes; this one will be the exception.
