Georgette Heyer is the bestselling author of many historical novels and has been compared to both Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers. Her novels are delightful, and her Inspector Hannasyde series is fun to read. The fourth installment series, A Blunt Instrument, where a perfectly respectable gentleman, Ernest Fletcher, is found bludgeoned to death in his study. He was well liked, and those close to him couldn’t think of any enemies that they may have had. When Inspector Hannasyde is called in to investigate the murder, unexpected issues are uncovered and the Inspector must fit the puzzle pieces together to solve the murder.
Heyer is an excellent writer and tells the story in a way that is easy to understand, yet also keeps her readers on the edge. There is some humor in this story, and her writing style makes readers look forward to reading each chapter. Her characters are well-developed, from Inspector Hannasyde to the supporting characters who make the story move along perfectly. There is building suspense in the novel, along with a lighthearted aura with delightful cultural background.
All told, this is another delightful novel by Georgette Heyer, and is definitely recommended for those who like light mysteries that keep them on the edge.
