Maria's Easy Southern Peach Cobbler Recipe

My friend and neighbor, Maria Sanchez, recently brought her peach cobbler to our yearly neighborhood cookout. Most of us didn’t get to taste it because it was gone in mere minutes. My southern husband (also known as Mr. Picky), was lucky enough to sample it, and pronounced it “The Best Peach Cobbler Ever.” Maria is from Georgia, and was gracious enough to share her recipe for Maria’s Easy Southern Peach Cobbler. Not only is it fabulous, it is easy to put together. Most of us can’t get our peaches from Georgia like Maria does, but we have good peaches here in Utah, and I used those. Good peaches are available around the country during late summer, and although Georgia is the Peach State, good peaches are grown throughout the US.

When peaches aren’t available, you can substitute blackberries for the peaches. Both flavors are fabulous.

12 Servings
1/2 cup butter
1 cup self-rising flour
1 1/2 cups sugar, divided
1 cup milk
4 cups fresh peaches, sliced
- Preheat oven to 375°. Place the butter in a 9" x 13" shallow casserole dish; put the dish in the oven to melt the butter while it's warming up.
- While the butter is melting, whisk together the flour, 1 cup sugar, and milk until smooth. When the butter is melted, pour the mixture into the butter; stir gently.
- Stir the remaining 1/2 cup sugar into the peaches; spoon them over the batter - do not stir.
- Bake 40-50 minutes or until the peaches are tender and the batter is cooked through.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
