Readers who like historical novels will want to pick up one set in the 50s and featuring Marilyn Monroe, will want to pick up Lake County, by award winning author, Lori Roy. Roy has definitely done her homework, and the story, written in first person, includes protagonist, Addie Anne Buckley, who is looking forward to her 18th birthday and a trip across the country. Addie doesn’t want to return to the small town of Hockta, Florida, and plans to get into the movies like her Aunt (who isn’t her real Aunt, but considers herself as such). Addie has a boyfriend, Truitt Holt, who runs a gambling game in their town, and is being pursued by the mob. The mob is also after her and her family.
Roy is an excellent storyteller, and the novel will grab readers immediately. She has a knack for making readers feel they are actually living in the 50s and readers will be taken back to that time. She also does an excellent job of developing the characters. Roy has certainly done her research on Marilyn Monroe and has built a viable story around her character.
Suspense begins to build from the beginning, and continues as the story goes through twists and turns, and interesting scenarios.
All told, this is an interesting novel that will keep readers on the edge and take them back in time.
