The fourth installment of the Miss Ashford Investigates, Last Dance in Salzburg. finds Atalanta Ashford, who has just been left a fortune by her grandfather, with the caveat that she carry on his solving of mysterious cases. She receives an invitation to a ballet from a wealthy family to celebrate their daughter’s 18th birthday; the father in the family was a friend of her grandfather’s, who had stayed at their home many times over the years, and had solved a mystery at the daughter’s 8th birthday where jewels were stolen and he had found the thief who went to prison. However the theif named wasn’t guilty and came to the house on the night of the ballet and birthday celebration. Atalanta finds him murdered, and one of the dancers is blamed. Atalanta investigates and gathers information on the case. However she puts herself in danger and may not survive when she discovers who the real murderer is.

Conroy does a good job of telling the story. It flows and keeps readers interested, so the book is hard to put down. There are ups and downs, and building suspense throughout. There is a bit of romance, since Atalanta’s boyfriend who is a well-known racecar driver meets her there. Another good aspect of the novel is the fact that Conroy does an excellent job of developing her characters. Besides the protagonist, Atalanta, the supporting characters are interesting and the scenarios including them help move the story along.

Conroy has also done her homework and the story rings true as to the culture at the time. Her writing takes readers back in history and makes for a feasible historical setting.

All told, this is an excellent novel that will keep readers on the edge. Readers will definitely anticipate the subsequent novels in this series.
