No Rest for the Wicked is the debut novel of author Rachel Louise Adams. In this novel, protagonist Dolores Hawthorne, a forensic pathologist living in LA, comes back to her tiny hometown of Little Horton because the FBI has contacted her regarding her father’s disappearance. She hasn’t been home in over 18 years, and has willingly left her memories of the city behind. Little Horton is a tourist trap for travelers due to horrible murders and other bizarre happenings on Halloween night throughout the years. As the past secrets come out, and old and new murders are discovered, Delores must investigate to clear her father’s name as well as her old friend’s names.

Adams is a new author, and weaves a good tale, as well as inserting sub-plots that keep readers on the edge. Unfortunately, she didn’t get the memo that crass, crude, profane language doesn’t appeal to readers with morals and standards. Overuse of the F word is offensive, and the sexual innuendo is also offensive. It is apparent throughout that the author must be lacking in having a good vocabulary and wants to cater to the trailer park scene and not mainstream thriller readers.

One thing she does a good job of is developing the characters. Delores is likeable, and readers will be able to relate. She and the sub-characters are believable, and help the story along.

All told, this is not a recommended novel. While the author is a good writer and has a good style, she needs to clean up her language and innuendo to attract real readers who have a sense of morality. For those who choose to listen to the audio book, the profanity and innuendo are accentuated and are even more unpleasantly disgusting, since it is impossible to “un-hear” the filth.
