Sewing as Practical Artistry

Sewing as Practical Artistry
I don’t think there’s anything that communicates better than art—it is quicker than language and clearer than philosophy. — Frederick R. Weisman

Asking a seamstress to mend is like asking Michelangelo to paint your garage. ~ Author Unknown

If we consider art is a noun giving us the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance and that sewing is a form of a verb meaning to join or attach by stitches, to make repair, or to enclose or secure with stitches then we have a perfect union of thought and form, beauty and function, concept and expertise.

Whether home sewing endeavors - as opposed to exclusive haute couture custom-fitted sewing by the masters, are considered as an economic strategy, mundane domestic labor or a pleasant crafting hobby they are rarely seen as approaching the level of art. Yet home sewing is more than anyone’s collection of needles, thimbles and spools of thread, more than a need to patch a hole, repair a seam, or sew on a button.

Today’s home sewers have the benefit of an extraordinary array of sewing machine technology and remarkable fashion and decorator fabrics in which to construct notable, functional, and delightfully desirable garments and home décor.

Contemporary home sewing practices are really modern technology in action. By downloading an online e-pattern to printer - trips to the fabric store to search for just the right tissue paper pattern are reduced. With the efficiency and ease of modern computer-driven sewing machines producing hundreds of stitch types using specialized presser feet home sewers can devote thoughtful creativity to manipulating and embellishing all types of fabric. Sergers on the cutting edge (literally) of fastening seams allow for realistic professional finishing and home embroidery machines stitch up an infinite number of shapes, lines and complex patterns relieving sewers and quilters of sometimes intensive sewing tasks.

Modern sewing tools empower even novice sewers with the self-assuredness that their sewing visions will be realized as well as enabling the efficiency and true expertise of those seasoned sewers to reveal their skilled sewing techniques.

Home sewing machine sales have seen a resurgence in growth over the past five years. Independent sewing bloggers and designer pattern makers revealing their techniques and products in online tutorial videos are a delight to watch. A knowledge of sewing was once a necessary skill. Today sewing is as much a combination of crafting and artistry, part of the maker movement, and open to all who desire an outlet to express beauty and function through fabric, needle and thread.
